If you’re looking to do some DIY around your home, maybe fit a new door, install some replacement windows, just generally shape up the house a bit. Here’s a word of warning:

It Can Go Wrong!

bad home improvement

You may be quite nifty with a hammer and nail, a professor with a measuring tape, but when it comes to large projects, perhaps you should think twice about Doing It Yourself.

For example take this replacement door that was fitted from the other side, the proprietor stupidly forgetting there was a difference in floor level on the front.

There are several home improvement companies that offer good quality products for a decent price.

So if you’re looking at doing some good ol’ fashioned DIY, get a quote first and see if it’s worth saving the hassle (and the pain) involved.

And here is where they just gave up!!

You need to ensure that your new conservatory is going to fit in with the style of your home. Unfortunately it is a fact of life that we live in a world where crime is part of everyday life. The British crime survey estimates that there were 729,000 burglaries in the year 2007/2008. Therefore the security of our homes should be a high priority. There are some simple every day precautions which we can take which can help to deter would be thieves. Always make sure you keep your windows and doors locked when you are not in your property, it sounds common sense however it is easy to forget.

Replacement Doors Double Glazing Windows Sash Windows

Again common sense but keep expensive high value items out of sight. Most thieves are opportunists so do not give them any encouragement. Don’t leave your property unattended for long periods of time. If you are going on holiday ask neighbours and friends to call round and check everything is ok.

Those are a couple of easy everyday changes we can make to our lives which will prevent potential thieves. However if you do not have the right security in place to start off with all the preventative measures in the world would not help. The major weakness in most homes is the windows and doors. These are the areas that you use to access your house so the likelihood is that a burglar would to. The good news is modern UPVC double glazing windows and doors are more secure than ever. This is because UPVC double glazing windows and doors now come with multi-point locking mechanisms which is much harder for thieves to break through.

This technology is not limited to just your front and back doors and windows but is also used in UPVC French doors and conservatories. Both UPVC French doors and conservatories are traditionally weak points within the home. Therefore considerable time and effort has been made by the UPVC manufacturers to ensure that conservatories and French doors are as safe as possible. UPVC windows, doors and conservatories come fitted with double glazing as standard. Double glazing is much harder to break and is therefore far more secure than traditional single glazing.

You work hard to have a nice home and to have nice things in it so you need to ensure it stays that way. The safety of your home is very important and should be taken seriously, take the time to go round your home and look for potential weak points and see what you can do to remedy the problem.

Does My Door Need To Be Replaced?

If you have a cracked or weak door the following information will help to relieve your concerns.

If the glass is damaged below approximately waist height then it has to be toughened to the British Standard. This can be achieved by heat treatment to toughen the glass, laminated glass or adding an approved plastic safety film onto the glass. Either way it must meet building regulations.

The red area below is critical location and needs to be replaced:

The regulations were implemented based on a risk analysis of the hazards and the possible injuries from glass at vulnerable locations.

A swinging sheet of glass (whether in a door or window) is more likely to cause injury if damaged, than a fixed, or limited opening Casement Window.

For nearly two years now there has been an unseen force moving his way up the home improvement ladder. Not by sales, or offering home improvement products, but through posting extremely informative comments.

A website by the name of Renegade Conservatory Guy has took the Home Improvement World with some surprise. Since September 25th 2007, Matthew Glover - the man behind the renegade mask, has been posting useful information for others involved in the industry.

However, the website isn’t just an informative collection of notes, it’s also a heavily personalised web-space for the renegade conservatory guy to add funny videos or anything that catches his eye - making it a fun website for industry insiders to keep returning to.

However the real beauty of this site comes from Matthew Glovers background. He owns Conservatory Outlet, one of the leading suppliers of Conservatories and Double Glazing in the UK. His background gives him a lot of access to insider information and often the first word on price increases, staff lay offs and other industry news.

The website is normally updated daily and contains an extensive archive of hundreds upon hundreds of posts. These can be searched through or sorted in to categories, allowing the user to see all news that relates to ‘conservatory videos’, for example.

showroom_harrogate

10 Companies Beating The Recession, is a recent post which lists details and reasons to why Matthew Glover has hand picked ten companies as those who will survive the recession. Information includes Google rankings, yearly target percentages and more.

The website also recently received an overhaul and the aesthetics have improved ten fold. There is also space offered for advertising - the money paid goes to charity - and many other features on top.

For someone looking for inside information or just a good read, Renegade Conservatory Guy is a fantastic website to start.

Contemporary Conservatories

Some people are wondering what exactly is an ‘Orangery’? The orangeries we sell at Conservatory Outlet appear quite like contemporary, Modern Conservatories.

One of the main feature of our Orangeries is that we utilise the brickwork and/or stone columns within the design, so that you don’t need the uPVC conservatory bay pole or corner posts you would normally find with a Conservatory.

Contemporary Orangery

We tend to fit internal lighting with downlighters which creates a great look to the inside of the orangery and helps sets it apart from a more traditional conservatory. A way to describe the difference in brief is the following - an orangery feels more like a glass extension or sunroom with a combination of glazed frames and walls. We normally install a glass roof (or polycarbonate if requested), creating a very light space. On our orangeries and there are a range of Double Glazing options available.

The images shown are taken from examples of installed orangeries and from our showrooms (Conservatories Cumbria for example). We have Modern conservatories set up at all of our showrooms around England and parts of Wales.

Orangeries

There are various orangery designs available, including Victorian Orangeries, Edwardian Orangeries and the popular modern orangeries. All our Orangeries are bespoke, which mean they are created to your exact specifications.

A great advantage of Conservatory Outlet orangeries is that they are also very affordable. If you are looking to get a quote for an orangery or would like further advice please visit one of our showrooms and speak with an industry expert, fill in a free online quote or phone us for free - 0800 915 8844.
